A.E. (Alfred Edward) Mathews (1831-1874) was an English immigrant whose early career was that of a traveling bookseller and artist. During his service in the Civil War he drew scenes of the conflict which were published as lithographs. In 1865, Mathews moved west and began producing the lithographs for which he is best known: images of Colorado, Montana and Rocky Mountain scenery.
