Few details of his life are known. The son of an enslaved black woman and a white man, Johnson was born into slavery around 1763.

Active in the Harlem Renaissance, artist, painter, sculptor, illustrator, muralist, and teacher Charles Henry Alston (1907–1977) was the first African-American supervisor for the Works Progress Administration's (WPA) Federal Art Project.
