Aimé Perret was best known for his softly lit Barbizon School landscapes, often depicting figures working or in repose in the fields. He studied under Joseph Antoine Vollon, Puvis de Chavanne, and Benoit Guichard at l’École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, and is said to have been an influence of Vincent Van Gogh.
