Al Loving studied painting at the University of Illinois, Champaign, before earning his MFA from the University of Michigan in 1965. Moving to New York City in 1968, he took up residence at the famous Chelsea Hotel and soon installed himself in a studio on the Bowery, thanks to references from established artists like Claes Oldenburg.
