    Dale Burlison DeArmond (July 2, 1914 in Bismarck, North Dakota – November 21, 2006 in Sitka, Alaska) was an American printmaker, author, and book illustrator. Dale met Robert Neil DeArmond, a native of Sitka, Alaska, while they were classmates at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington. They married on July 29, 1935 and lived on a troller in Sitka.

    Dale graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma in 1932 – shortly before her 18th birthday – and one of her first jobs was at a local radio station, in the days before radio was taken over by music and everything was done live. One of her specialties was the creation of sound effects.

    This is how artist Dale DeArmond describes arriving in the Athabascan village of Nondalton at the north end of the Alaska Peninsula in the 1970s. Her visit there resulted in a collection of 12 woodcuts based on legends from the Nondalton area. The entire set of woodcuts comprising this exhibition was purchased by Juneau resident Stephen Rausch, who left the collection to the State Museum in a 1986 bequest.

    When Dale DeArmond studied art in the late 1950s, she did it by mail. The correspondence school that administered her program, the Famous Artist's Course, was based in Rhode Island. When one of her assignments required that she create a pastoral scene, Dale painted an imaginary farm with the mountains near her Juneau home for background.
