She lived in Alaska since 1951, when she traveled up the Inside Passage by steamship, fell in love with Juneau, and gave herself until the boat left the next day to find a job and a place to live. Rie Muñoz was born in southern California in 1921 as Marie Mounier. Her parents were from Holland and she spent a lot of her childhood there, where Rie was a common nickname. Rie passed away in Juneau on April 6, 2015. She will be greatly missed, but her art lives on for all to enjoy.
