The marine painter William Alexander Coulter was born on March 7, 1849, in Glenariff, Ireland, where his father was a captain in the coast guard. By the time Coulter arrived in San Francisco at the age of twenty, he had firsthand experience of ships and the sea. He obtained a job as a sail maker, and he used this knowledge in his art.
