About the artist Alexander Johnson grew up in a rural setting in West Sussex, just outside Chichester in the 1960’s and 70’s. His formative years were spent in the shadow of the South Downs walking and cycling around with complete freedom.

The son of an Edinburgh architect, Alexander Johnston was apprenticed to a seal engraver before studying at the Trustees’ Academy from 1831 to 1834. In 1836 he travelled to London and entered the Royal Academy Schools.
