Alexandra (Sandie) Gardner was born in 1945 and brought up in Glasgow. She studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1963 to 1967 closely under the tutelage of the Head of School David Donaldson, who, as soon as she qualified, offered her an immediate teaching and lecturing post within the school. Alexandra, or Sandie as she prefers, remained as a lecturer at GSA for 21 years.

Sandie has had a tough life including three marriages and a diagnosis, at the age of 37 of renal failure, a condition that had gone undetected from birth. She then had to go through a period of kidney dialysis and thereafter two kidney transplants.
