Chuck Close, in full Chuck Thomas Close, (born July 5, 1940, Monroe, Washington, U.S.), American artist noted for his highly inventive techniques used to paint the human face. He is best known for his large-scale Photo-realist portraits. Close began taking art lessons as a child and at age 14 saw an exhibition of Jackson Pollock ’s abstract paintings, which helped inspire him to become a painter.

Chuck Close was born in Monroe, Washington, in 1940 and received a BA degree from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1962. He attended the Yale Summer School of Music and Art in Norfolk, Connecticut, in 1961 and Yale University from 1962 to 1964, where he earned BFA and MFA degrees.
