Founded in 1986, the Plein Air Painters of America started as a small group of artists dedicated to painting the landscape directly from life. Aug 14, 2007 · The Plein-Air Painters of American (PAPA) was founded by Denise Burns on Catalina Island, off the coast of California, in 1986. The idea was to handpick 20 artists, have them paint on the island for a week, and then show their work in a sale on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
