Artist's Statement. Annie Fry. I have always been interested in colour but my focus on people developed whilst I was teaching, and I became interested by the work of Freud and Spencer, Hammershoi & Wyeth, among others. My studies in sculpture at college made me more aware of surface qualities then to the effects of light on surfaces.

Annie Fry. People or things that I see in my daily life trigger ideas for my work, whilst light, surface and colour are the main elements that interest me when developing those ideas. When painting, initially I create a surface on which to paint so that the surface interest is there before a mark is made. Sometimes this surface is unrelated to the composition, whilst at other times it is an integral part.
