V4 - PCB Via annular ring size too small for IPC Class 3 The smallest vias have a pad size of 0.45mm and a hole size of 0.20mm. This is outside IPC-A-600H class 3 (which is used in the PCB specification) as it may leave a too small annular ring. According to IPC-A-600H, section 2.10.3 a minimum external annular ring must be 0.050mm.

A small ring would put the via at risk of touching the edge of the pad, which is called tangency, or no longer being encircled by the pad at all. This is called an annular breakout. A class 2 annular ring is at least 1 mil wide. In an IPC Class 3 annular ring, the annular ring must be at least 2 mils or more in measurement. PRO TIP!

Oct 07, 2050 · Determine the annular ring width minimum. Step #4: Determine the via wall minimum (if applicable). Step #5: Select the size and location of the annular ring. To optimize your annular ring PCB design, the specifications must fall within the tolerances of your contract manufacturer’s (CM’s) DFM rules and guidelines.

A minimum of .005″ annular ring for vias or a minimum of .007″ for component holes is required for manufacturing your printed circuit board design. Advanced Circuits requires that vias with connecting traces have a pad that is 10 mils larger than their drill, and component through holes with electrical connections have a pad that is 14 mils ...Author: Armando Fernandez
