Leto was awarded a stipend to travel to Florence, where he worked between 1867-1878, when the present lot was painted. La Spezia, a port city a few hours north of Florence, was developed as a naval base during the 1860s.

Antonio Leto was represented by the dealer Goupil in Paris where he met the French Impressionists. As of 1889, he settled in Capri where his views attracted many international collectors. Painted in 1880, on the Mergelina Shore is one of his most successful images of Capri with the Vesuvius in the distance.
