Campin is usually now assumed to be identical with the Master of Flémalle. He was, with van Eyck, the founder of the realistic style of oil painting in the Netherlands in the early 15th century. His influence was further extended by his pupil Rogier van der Weyden. Campin was active at Tournai from 1406.

Campin worked in the town of Tournai, on the southern border of Flanders and became a citizen of that town in 1410.

Robert Campin was born in the late 1370's and became a citizen of Tournai (Doornik in Dutch) in 1410. He probably settled in the city earlier, around 1405. He made a living from painting banners and statues. He probably became an important man in the city, receiving commissions from the city government, a number of churches and from rich citizens.
