That man was Frederick William Benteen. Benteen, born in Petersburg, Va., in August 1834, served the Union Army well in some 18 major Civil War engagements. After the war, he was colonel of the 138th U.S. Colored Volunteers for less than a year before receiving his commission as a 7th Cavalry captain in September 1866.
