James Montgomery Flagg, (born June 18, 1877, Pelham Manor, N.Y., U.S.—died May 27, 1960, New York, N.Y.), American illustrator, poster artist, and portrait painter known for his illustrations of buxom girls and particularly for his World War I recruiting poster of a pointing Uncle Sam with the caption “I Want You” (see Uncle Sam).

Born in Pelham Manor, New York, James Montgomery Flagg attended several art schools, including four years spent at the Art Students League in New York City. He worked prolifically in a number of media but is best remembered for his poster designs. James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) began his illustration career at the age of 12, with contributions to Life magazine by age 14. He studied in New York at the Art Students League as well as in London and Paris. He worked in a variety of illustration styles in publishing, and rose to become the top paid illustrator at the height of his career.
