Born in Lumberville, Pennsylvania on Aug. 11, 1819, Martin Johnson Heade studied under Thomas Hicks and for several years in Italy, France, and England. He began his career as a portraitist in St. Louis and other American cities. It was after his move to New York City in the 1850s that he abandoned portraiture in favor of landscapes and coastals.
