Born 1908, Chicago, Illinois. Died 1994, Plato Center, Illinois. For someone who worked and lived in the public eye for nearly thirty years, Lee Godie was tight-lipped about her private life. A Chicago native, Godie had married and raised a family, but in 1968, following the deaths of two of her children, she took to the steps of the Art Institute of Chicago and reinvented herself as an artist.

Lee Godie was born Jamot Emily Godie around 1903 in Mudtown, Illinois, as one of a family of 11 children. She married George Hathaway and had 3 children. The only education she had was piano lessons as a child. She was a well-known street artist in Chicgo for many years where she spent much of her life as a homeless “bag lady.”
