William Home Lizars (1788 - 1859) was a painter, engraver and publisher in Edinburgh His father was a publisher and an engraver, and taught William how to engrave. Lizars was a publisher based in London and Edinburgh. In the 1830s and 1840s they published a comprehensive set of prints of animals, usually set against a natural background. The prints were hand colored engravings and, compared to earlier prints, were relatively accurate portrayals of the animals.
