William Home Lizars (1788 - 1859) was a painter, engraver and publisher in Edinburgh His father was a publisher and an engraver, and taught William how to engrave. William led the family publishing business "Lizars" to become the experts in making finely detailed engravings of natural history subjects.

Lizars was a publisher based in London and Edinburgh. In the 1830s and 1840s they published a comprehensive set of prints of animals, usually set against a natural background. The prints were hand colored engravings and, compared to earlier prints, were relatively accurate portrayals of the animals.
