Born in Montana to Greek parents, Peter Voulkos worked his way through high school and then hitchhiked to Portland, Oregon. Peter Voulkos almost single-handedly changed the direction of contemporary American ceramics in the late 1950s. Voulkos freed clay from its traditional, historical, and technical limitations by expanding the aesthetic possibilities to include gesture and sculpturally expressive forms.
