La Farge was one of the very first western artists to become interested in the art of Japan, starting in the late 1850s. In 1870 he was the first American to publish a study of Japanese art, a chapter in Raphael Pumpelly’s book Across America and Asia (New York, 1870). He traveled to Japan in 1886 with his friend, Henry Adams.
