A member of the Jicarilla band of Apaches, this self-taught artist was especially noted for his depictions of horses, whether alone or with riders. His mastery of gouache – opaque watercolor – and love of horses is evident in every painting. Frank VIgil’s work is full of vigorous presence and movement. He flourished from the 1950’s to the ’70’s , before his death in 1977 at the age of 59.
