Although the artist is unknown it is good to note that the sitter’s father, Sir William Butts the Elder (Fig. 1), who was the royal physician to King Henry VIII, had several portraits done by one of the great Northern Renaissance painters of his time, Hans Holbein the Younger (Fig. 2) (MFA).
