By default, the menu sources for both horizontal and vertical menu are the pages you create in Artisteer. The captions are from the page titles in the site map. In all of the built-in CMS templates, you can change the source for both in the backend. You cannot edit the menu items directly in Artisteer (unless you enable the Include Content Option).

Navigate Header tab -> Insert -> Controls -> Position. Right-click on the control-ID -> select Options, and put the custom ID in the Name field (e.g. MyControl). After exporting and installing the template go to Wordpress Dashboard -> Appearance -> Widgets, create a widget and assign it to the widget area created by this control in Artisteer.

What I originally did was just upload the Artisteer template into Joomla and assign the main menu to position-1 but I still could not see the menu. I then created a new module called Artisteer and assign that to position-1, this time low and behold, the main menu was there. Why it doesn't work for the main menu I really don't know.
