The strange thing is that when I have set the top menu to "top" and then install the Artisteer template, then the Artisteer template will show but without the top menu because there is no "top" position in the Artisteer template. So when I change the position to user3 then the template won't show anymore.

Hi, I use Artisteer also, if you are looking to have a menu across the top of the page all you need to do is in the backend of your Joomla site go to module manager and create a new menu module and call it "top menu" or anything you want then set the position to user3 and be sure to enable it and it then should show up on your site.
