The natural bush land on David Houston’s property at Box Hill was the site of the artists’ first plein-air camp. During 1885 and 1886, this was the favoured painting site for Fred McCubbin, Tom Roberts and another artist, Louis Abrahams. It is thought that Jane Sutherland made day trips to the camp.
