Feb 28, 2021 · Yes, if you’re looking for huge payoffs with relatively flat terrain in the Catskills, you’d have a hard time finding a better hike than North-South Lake to Artist’s Rock and Newman’s Ledge. (You could even cut that hike a little shorter by turning around at Sunset Rock, and you’ll still have scored several huge views without having to do any scrambling or very serious climbs.)

Artist bluff is not a hard trail but can be a little taxing if you are a novice hiker. Negotiating the rocks down after seeing the bluff can be hard. Make sure to take it slow. We went after it hard rained and the trail was slippery. The views from the top are beautiful.4.5/5(77)

There’s also a place called Bad Man’s Cave up there, which looks cool from what I can tell of other people’s Flickr pics. Hike Info. Found at the end of the Middle Fork road, this short but steep trail reaches a scenic viewpoint in just over a mile, providing a big pay off with minimal effort. With a high point at 1,860 feet above sea level, the trail is usable year-round, providing the Middle Fork road is passable (snow is not removed from the road in the winter).
