The actual name of the group was popularized in the book Three Scottish Colourists (1950) - a critique of Peploe, Cadell and Hunter, by T.J.Honeyman - but a fourth painter, Fergusson, is customarily added to them, despite the fact that he didn't return to Scotland until 1940.
