Jun 14, 2007 · Personally I use a womans hair tie. The kind with out metal in them. To help mute at the neck. I will say the thicker the better. As long as it's not like a huge one. The standard ones ~ 1/4" o.d. double wrapped help. But I think I may go out and buy the ones that are about 3/8 - 7/16 o.d. Thats what i've seen used in pics of artist in the past.

Flatwounds are associated with a rounder, mellower traditional jazz tone: I'd guess Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery used flatwounds. Roundwounds give you a brighter tone. I'll bet most rock guitarists use roundwounds. Roundwounds cause more fretwear, but probably not so much more that you'd avoid them just for that reason.
