Having multiple instances of the artist tag lets the track show up under both Brubeck and Bennett when browsing by artist. Vorbis and FLAC tags natively support multiple instances of one tag; for mp3, I use ID3v2.4 because this seems the most compatible with multiple instances of the same tag, but someone else might be able to correct me.

Currently on specific tracks that feature other artists I use a semicolon in between artists when in foobar2000, and a forward slash when importing from EAC (both appear to have the same result, I believe the actual metadata uses a forward slash).

Multiple artists for either a track or album artist can be specified in "Artist1 / Artist2 / Artist3" format. If no Album Artist tag exists, Kodi will use the first (primary) artist from the tracks as the Album Artist. Essentially we do a string comparison of all the track artists, and assign the common artists as the Album artist. This is generally the TPE1 tag in ID3.
