The Scheme was reactivated during the Second World War, and for the Korean and Vietnam wars. In 1999 the Scheme was renewed when artists were appointed to depict peacekeeping operations in East Timor (Timor-Leste).

Lindsay’s German ogre is one of the rare examples of Australian poster art produced in war without a letterpress. It is considered an excellent example of the crude caricature and vilification of the enemy and is in keeping with Lindsay's portrayal of “the Hun” in his many cartoons produced for the Sydney Bulletin during the First World War.

Australia entered the First World War along with Britain in August 1914. The government was not slow however in attempting to stimulate recruitment in a country where conscription was forbidden. In addition to posters the government despatched specially inscribed postcards (e.g. 'Hasten!', 'Hurry!') to the homes of men who had not enlisted to date.
