Hendrick Avercamp (January 27, 1585 (bapt.) – May 15, 1634 (buried)) was a Dutch painter. Avercamp was born in Amsterdam, where he studied with the Danish-born portrait painter Pieter Isaacks (1569–1625), and perhaps also with David Vinckboons. Amsterdam, 25 Jan. 1585; bur. Kampen, 15 May 1634). Dutch painter and draughtsman, active in Kampen, the most famous exponent of the winter landscape, which he established as a distinct category in Dutch art. He was deaf and dumb and known as ‘de Stomme van Kampen’ (the mute of Kampen).
