The artist was the son of William Francis Barraud, Prime Clerk in the London Customs House and younger brother of the painter, William Barraud (1810-1850). He became a chemist and emigrated to New Zealand in 1849 where he painted and sketched. In 1877 he published a volume of chromo-lithographs entitled New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive.
