1976 was the first year Bayfest started in Corpus Christi due to a $27,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, $24,000 from cash donations, and about $10,000 in registration fees from artists and sponsors. More than 800 people volunteered their time and skills to operate the festival in addition to the numerous clubs and organizations that ran 47 food and drink booths for the festival.
