Mar 28, 2013 · For George Bellows, whose exhibition at the Royal Academy begins with asserting he was very popular in his time but was subsequently out-shone by his also-American contemporary Edward Hopper, one doesn’t quite know what it is that has prompted this re-evaluation but my guess is a mix of commercial reasons and unrealistic American patriotism.

Bellows settled in New York City in 1858 on his return to America. He spent most of his remaining career in New York, though he briefly moved to Boston. In 1859, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member, and became a full member in 1861. He visited Europe again in 1867.
