William (Bill) Sutton (1917 - 2000) The work of Canterbury artist Bill Sutton straddles the border between landscape painting and contemporary painting. Sutton’s work before 1955 was regionalist realism, but the artist’s eye for the abstract in nature became more acute as he grew older. His viewpoint zoomed in to studies of vegetation, grasses and rocks, then out again to aerial perspectives.

Born in Christchurch, Savage studied at the Canterbury College School of Art. He later studied with Sydney Lough Thompson (1877-1973) and Archibald Nicoll (1886 - 1953). After travelling, he returned to New Zealand in 1933, settling in Christchurch where he became vice-president of the New Zealand Society of Artists.

Bill Sutton taught at the School of Fine Arts at Canterbury University for 40 years. He was granted a lifetime membership to many art societies around New Zealand and was made a Companion of the British Empire in 1980 for his services to art. He died 23 January 2000 in Christchurch.
