BILL HAWARD. The visual arts were a natural endeavour in Bill’s family. His father, Birkin Haward, was an architect and painter, while his mother Muriel studied at the Royal College of Art. His brother Birkin was also an architect, while brother John became an art teacher, with both still painting. Bill initially studied at the Architectural Association until a work experience period in his father’s office.

In 1956 John Hutton produced a graffito image showing the four elements, earth, air, fire and water, commissioned by architect Birkin Haward [q.v]. It was located in the stairwell of the main building of Fison's Levington Research Station, near Ipswich which, despite the ministrations of a number of ex-Fison's employees, was destroyed in the 1980s.
