Arthur Boyd (1920-1999) was part of a unique artistic family. Across many generations the Boyds include painters, sculptors, architects and other arts professionals, commencing with Boyd's grandfather Arthur Merric Boyd whose brothers were Penleigh, a landscape artist, and Martin, a writer. His sister was painter Helen Read.

This was a time when artist and potter Merric Boyd (1888–1959) and his family occupied an overgrown semi-rural double block called Open Country in Murrumbeena, a suburb south east of Melbourne. The property abutted Murrumbeena Creek and the remnants of the short-lived Outer Circle railway line.
