Born in South Porcupine, Ontario, Brian Burnett studied art at the New School of Art, Toronto, from 1974 — 1976 under instructors such as Graham Coughtry and Gordon Rayner. In 1980 Av Isaacs started to represent Burnett, and soon after Burnett was involved in the founding of ChromaZone, an artist collective in Toronto focused around figurative art.
