Robinson was born and raised on Waiben (also known as Thursday Island) in the Torres Strait Islands. He belongs to the Kala Lagaw Ya language group of the Torres Strait and Wuthathi language group of the Shelburne Bay area of Cape York Peninsula and is now based in the Australian mainland city of Cairns, which is the closest metropolitan city to the Torres Strait.
