Artist Statement Briony Anderson's practice ranges from studio-based work to collaborative projects, often seeking a reinvestigation of the cultural significance of landscape. Current work responds to 18th and 19th century portraiture, but only to its backgrounds (backdrops of landscape).

Briony Anderson. Briony graduated in Fine Art Painting from Edinburgh College of Art in 2005. She first gained recognition for work in which she explored the idea of the horizon line, capturing its many consistencies and changes, in soft muted colours. In 2006 she won the Mable Mackinley Award for Painting from the Royal Glasgow Institute, plus the Aberdeenshire Visual Artist\'s Award.

Briony Anderson’s latest series of paintings is an investigation of the background, explicitly landscape as background. Evolving from a previous body of work, which took the portraits of artist Henry Raeburn and omitted the figures from their landscape backdrops, Anderson continues this exploration with work that responds to the landscape backdrops of further eighteenth and nineteenth century portraiture.
