Kermit “Buck” Ewing, a painter, professor, and provocateur from Pittsburgh who came to Knoxville in 1948 as the first head of UT’s new art department. Taking a step back to the mid-1930s, Hazle Buck Ewing commissioned a sculpture by Iowa born artist Nellie Verne Walker called “Her Son.” The sculpture stood on the north lawn of Sunset Hill from the 1930s – 1969, it was moved to a private residence after Mrs. Ewing’ death. “Her Son” was considered Walker’s best-loved work.
