Calvin Hunt was born in 1956 in Alert Bay, British Columbia. He is the son of the late Chief Thomas Hunt and Emma Hunt, which gives him the distinction of ancestry from both the Kwagiulth and Nuu-chah-nulth peoples. Hunt began woodcarving at the age of 12.

Calvin A. Hunt. As I work within the traditional Northwest Coast Kwagu’l style, I am reminded of the diversity, spirituality, transformation and meaning of our Kwakw a k a ’wakw culture. The subject, design elements and colors are elements that contribute to my inspiration. Calvin Hunt is renowned for large monumental sculptures. He has lived in Fort Rupert since 1982. In May 1988, Calvin carved and raised the Hunt Pole, which is hereditarily owned by his brother Chief George Hunt Sr. He also carved a memorial grave figure for his father at the Fort Rupert Cemetery.
