According to Giovanni Pietro Bellori, who wrote an early account of Caravaggio’s life, he traveled to the city and was influenced by “the colours of Giorgione.” There is no hard documentary evidence to confirm or deny the speculation, but Caravaggio’s sometime master Peterzano had trained in Venice and may have encouraged his wayward apprentice to go there.
