Cecil Gordon Lawson was a landscape painter and watercolourist. He was born in Shropshire to Scottish parents and came to London in 1861 with his father William Lawson, who was a portrait painter. Cecil at first painted small detailed studies of fruit and flowers in the manner of William Henry Hunt.

Cecil Gordon Lawson. (1849-1882), Landscape painter. Later Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry. Sitter in 4 portraits. Cecil Lawson learned to paint at home, following the example of his father, the portrait painter William Lawson, and his brother, also an artist. In 1869, he devoted himself to the study of Dutch seventeenth-century landscape, copying paintings in the National Gallery.
