In 1976, Goodhue retired to Georgetown, Maine, and turned to his art full-time. Goodhue worked in many different mediums and styles throughout his lifetime. He is well renowned for developing a technique invented by David Baker called vitreous flux. This method is the application of watercolor to an impenetrable surface such as a Marlite board, to which Goodhue added volcanic ash to the paint.

Description. Charles Quincy Goodhue (1835-1910), a Portland amateur artist, spent the last 20 years of his life sketching Portland as it looked before the fire of 1866. This drawing depicts the Old Exchange as it appeared in 1845. It was located at the corner of Middle and Exchange Streets.
