Pikes and possibly other weapons were secretly made and stockpiled in the Chartist Cave during the summer of 1839. They were subsequently carried by Tredegar Chartists on the great march on Newport on November 3rd - 5th 1839. Visitors to Newport can still see the holes in the pillars outside the Westgate near the bottom of Stow Hill.

The more commonly used modern name “Chartist Cave” dates from 1839 when Chartist reformers used the cave to stockpile weapons in advance of their march on Newport on 4th November of that year. There is a plaque at the entrance to the cave commemorating the actions of the Chartists.
