The Chartist Cave has long been known, originally under the name of Tylles Fawr - The Great Hole. In 1839 the cave was used by Chartist Rebels to prepare and stockpile weapons such as pikes for their attack and seizure of Newport in November of that year. Since this time it has been known as The Chartist Cave or Chartists' Cave.

Aug 14, 2018 · The entrance to the Chartist Cave is high on the moors near the summit of Mynydd Llangynidr. The arched entrance is formed by a millstone grit cap from beneath which the underlying limestone has been eroded. The cave is also known by two Welsh names; Ogof Fawr (the 'Big Cave') and earlier as Tylles Fawr (the 'Great Hole').

Jan 25, 2021 · The Chartist's Cave is located in a prominent knoll to the east of Garn Fawr round cairn on the open, exposed moorland of Trefil Las at SO 1276 1523. The original name of the cave seems to have been Tylles Fawr (the Great Hole). In 1809, the cave came to the attention of Theophilus Jones, the author of the History of Brecknockshire:
