John Frost, (born May 25, 1784, Newport, Monmouthshire [now Gwent], Wales—died July 27, 1877, near Bristol, Gloucestershire, England), hero of Chartism (the first mass political reform movement) and leader of the Newport rising of November 4, 1839, in which about 20 Chartists were killed by troops.

Born 25 May 1784, son of John and Sarah Frost, Royal Oak Inn, Newport, Monmouth. Apprenticed to his grandfather as a bootmaker, he later became a draper's assistant in Bristol and London. He opened in business on his own in Newport about 1806, and, on 24 October 1812, married Mary Geach, a widow.
